I Let Grok Bot Run My Domain Business for 30 Days

I own about 250 domain names.

And I’m running an experiment in AI domain investing.

In the last 30 days, AI bots put in more than 347 hours of work on my domain name investing business.

They graded over 700 names.

They bought 11.

They started experimenting with cold email and sent over 100.

Total sales so far? Zero.

That’s the honest starting point for AI domain investing.

I gave Grok Bot 6 months to make this business profitable. You can follow the whole thing over at domainnamelovers.com, where we share the names we’re hunting, what sells, and what the bots are doing.

Here’s everything we’ve built so far, plus the parts I didn’t see coming.

Why My Domain Strategy Is So Passive

My domain name investing strategy is very passive. (If you’re new to this, here’s my take on domain name flipping.)

I do the research. I buy names I think are good and that I’m willing to hold on to for a long time.

Then I list them for sale on both Spaceship Seller Hub and Afternic.

And then I basically just let time pass.

It’s like putting a for sale sign on the house and waiting for someone to eventually make an offer.

My goal is to sell 1 to 2% of the portfolio per year.

If I can do that, I can stay profitable, keep growing the portfolio, and invest in better names over time.

As of right now, I’ve reinvested all profits.

I’m slightly profitable.

That’s where I am.

The Six-Month AI Domain Investing Test

I wanted a real use case for Grok Bot.

At first, I didn’t want to spend the money on it.

So I made myself a deal: I’ll give this thing 6 months and see if AI domain investing can actually work for my business.

Let’s just test it and see how it goes.

I’m a little over a month in.

Here’s what I can tell you so far:

I haven’t made a single sale yet.

But I’m blown away by Grok Bot.

I’m not only using it for domain investing anymore. I’ve expanded it, and now I have a lot of different “team members” going.

The Research Sheet Grok Bot Runs

There’s a Google Sheet at the center of my whole AI domain investing setup.

Grok Bot literally runs it.

Every day it does research, pulls new names onto the list, and grades them:

  • B’s are possible ones.
  • A’s are the ones it thinks are really good. Those are the ones I take a look at.

There’s also a tab for the names we’ve actually purchased.

When I asked what we’d bought most recently, it came back with 11 names from our October wave of research.

One of them was my own idea, but Grok Bot added it to the list anyway.

What the Bots Do Every Day

There’s a running list of jobs the bots handle on their own.

I don’t always check on it, because I know it’s just doing things.

I’ll say something like, “Hey, remind me of that every Tuesday,” or “Yeah, let’s do that,” and it becomes a recurring job.

A few of the interesting ones:

  • Discord update bot. I’m part of a group of folks in lower Alabama, the LAAI group. Grok Bot set up a bot that posts updates on what we’ve been up to. Right now it looks like every four days or so. I’ll probably move it to once a week.
  • Candidate hunts. Three times a week, it searches for potential names to register.
  • GoDaddy closeouts. It watches closeout names too. I used to do this on my own, but I just didn’t have the time.
  • Weekly newsletter draft. More on that below.

This is basically me setting up a team member to do the things I never got around to.

Building the Website and Newsletter

One of the very first things we did was rebuild the website, domainnamelovers.com, and some tools.

Granted, I used Claude Code for some of that.

After the rebuild, I assigned Grok Bot to help me build out the email newsletter using beehiiv.

Which is crazy.

Great tool for newsletters, by the way. [here’s my link if you want to check it out, and here’s why I love beehiiv.]

Bot Email Inboxes and Cold Outreach

This part is really interesting.

The bots literally have their own email addresses.

We’re using a tool called AgentMail, which gives your AI agents a real email inbox.

I’m on the paid account, currently $20 a month, so we can use our own domains.

We’ve sent over 100 outbound emails.

And when I say “we,” I mean Grok Bot.

The Spam Problem (and the Warmup Fix)

We’d been warming up the email addresses. Basically, sending emails to my own accounts.

But even with that, we figured out a lot of our emails were probably going to spam.

So we paused outbound and went back to warming up the addresses.

The good news?

On October 6th, a test email went to spam in both Gmail and Workspace.

Now both put it in the inbox.

So we’re likely going to start some slow outbound again.

700+ Graded Names (and My Favorites)

Back to the research sheet.

Grok Bot has graded over 500 domains as a B and over 200 as an A.

So far, I’ve only purchased 11.

The initial work was all done by Grok Bot. Then I used my gut and made the final call on what to buy.

A few I really like:

  • Meetup Barn. I think that could be a really cool company.
  • Golf Cart Medic. I think it graded this one a B, but I really like it.
  • Metro Wiring. I like this one a good bit.
  • Medical Scribe Jobs. It gets a lot of searches every month, thousands, maybe 8,000 or so. I may even build a website on it myself.

Using NameBio Sales to Shape the Research

NameBio puts out a daily list of domains that sold.

So I’m using it to further shape our research strategy.

For example, one day’s NameBio list showed $2.2 million in sales.

From that, two new name styles went into the hunt. One of them is short hobby and collectibles names under 15 characters.

So every day we do research, our AI domain investing strategy gets a little sharper.

AI Was Supposed to Save Me Time

Here’s what’s sort of funny.

AI was only supposed to save me time. (I’ve been testing it for a while, like this bike-ride chat with AI about the future of SEO.)

But I feel like I’m working more now than I was before.

I mean that in a good way.

I’m interacting with and managing all these bots. It’s like I suddenly have a bunch of direct reports.

The Timesheet: 347 Hours

It felt like we were replacing a lot of hours, so I had my main Grok Bot build a timesheet dashboard.

Every week, it now writes up exactly what we’ve done, in detail.

The total since August 24th: 347 hours.

In a little over a month.

Even at a very low wage of $10 an hour, that’s about $3,470 of work.

Pretty wild.

What’s Next

I’m going to keep using Grok Bot for AI domain investing, and for everything else as well.

There’s still about five months left on the AI domain investing test, and still no sales.

Keep watching. Stay connected.

I’ll keep you posted on how it goes.
