Desperate to learn how to run SEO website audits?

Well, after a dozen years of experience and getting 2 of my websites to reach 150,000 monthly pageviews from organic traffic, here is an SEO audit checklist you can use to perform your site’s audit.

It’s a task you need to do whether you have a large website or are just getting started with your blog.

Have someone on your team look through these or hire a knowledgeable SEO (like me) to help you out.

A quick note before you dive in…

SEO can be scary.

I get it.

A lot of these items can seem like technical jargon – and admittedly, they are.

Just think of it like taking care of your car.

You want to make sure the frame is strong (site layout and structure).

You have to keep gas in the tank (content and keyword research).

It needs to be kept in tune (checking for broken links (learn how here) & updating old content).

And of course, when you need a repair, the mechanic might tell you that the carburetorA1Sauce is broken (you just need to make sure you like and trust your mechanic so that you can just get it fixed!)

Ok, on to my checklist…

Check Google Indexing

• Search “site:yourwebsite.com” in Google to see indexed pages.

SSL Certificate Confirmation

• Ensure there’s a padlock in the browser, indicating HTTPS.
  If not, you need an SSL certificate. Your web host can help with this.

Run a Site Audit

• Use tools like Ahrefs, SEObility, or Ubersuggest.
  (I currently use Ubersuggest, but any of these will work!)
• Crawl your website for a report and fix items like…
  • Address title tags, meta descriptions, and redirects.
  • Add alt tags to images and check their sizes.
  • Manage backlinks and remove spammy ones.
  • Broken links (use GSC or a tool like this) and images.
    (This is especially important to monitor as time marches on).

Confirm No Website Duplication

Visitors to your site should only be able to access it at one of these addresses:

https://yourdomain.com

https://www.yourdomain.com

Also check http: version — that’s not secure (and you need an SSL certificate)

Any of the options that you choose above should all redirect to a single version of your https site.

Review Site Traffic – Determine Drops

• Google constantly has updates going on.
• Is the competition beating you?

Internal Linking and Popular Pages

• Link to your popular pages.
• Review internal links and avoid orphaned posts (ones that get left all alone with no other content linking to it… if you have lots of content, Link Whisper is a nice plugin that can help with this issue – we use it…)

Implement Schema Markup

• Create structured data for Google (your SEO plugin will assist with this).

Sitemap Verification

• Check for a sitemap, like mine here.

Site Structure Analysis

• Ensure all pages are within three clicks (this is a great goal).
• Strategize internal linking to top pages.

Check for Manual Actions

• Use Google Search Console for alerts.
  I check Google Search Console as much (if not more) than Google Analytics.

Review Robots.txt File

• Check “domain/robots.txt”, like at Robots.txt File.

Mobile-Friendly Test

• Find issues with Google Search Console.

Additional Checks

• Organize URL structure logically.
  Look at your URL hierarchy — Homepage > children > boys > shoes — make sure it’s easy to follow.
• Analyze performance with Google PageSpeed.
  You can use other tools like Pingdom to get a second opinion.
• Check that your NAP (name | address | phone number) is consistent across directory listings.
• Confirm that you have secured social media accounts that link back to your website correctly.

After the Audit, Move to Keyword Research

• Understand the Customer Journey.
• Use Google Trends.
• Check Competitors
• Find Keyword Gaps

Optimizing your website for search engines and using visual bookmarking tools like Pinterest are both excellent strategies for expanding your online audience.

But the issue is how to keep readers coming back for more.

For these functions, you would typically need to install several third-party apps. 

If you use the Trellis theme, everything works together perfectly.

There will NEVER be any hiccups or delays on your sites.

Things That Could Be Improved 

Mediavine Facebook Group 

Once you get accepted into the program, you’ll have access to Mediavine’s VERY ACTIVE Facebook community. 

This is optional, though. 

There are several thousand very active members of the group right now.

Every Mediavine publisher will have access to a very active Facebook community.

However, participation is optional.

This group has become a victim of its own success, which is a bit of an issue.

There are a number of irrelevant posts that have nothing to do with Mediavine or advertising.

If you’re having trouble with your blog or just have a general query about SEO, you might want to join this group and ask the members for advice.

More often than not, this sparks insightful dialogue.

That’s fantastic, but if you’re hoping to learn more about Mediavine and/or ads, you might be disappointed.

The facts are all there; it’s just buried under a mountain of other, often irrelevant, posts.

This is definitely something to think about before applying or making the switch.

Commissions 

While Mediavine doesn’t charge you a monthly fee to use their service, they will take a cut of any advertising income your site generates.

Although this is typical for ad networks, you should compare Mediavine to other ad networks to determine which will best suit your advertising budget.

How Much Can You Make With Mediavine? 

The most important thing to keep in mind about Mediavine is that there is never any assurance that your ad revenue will skyrocket.

This is because the frequency with which ads show on your site is directly proportional to the amount of traffic your site receives.

All Mediavine publishers earn a cut of the network’s ad income.

You’d essentially be getting paid for ad space. 

So, as your site’s popularity grows, so does your cut of the earnings.

While all publishers begin at 75%, those who generate a particularly high volume of sessions are awarded a larger cut of the revenue.

This is all just a matter of growing your audience.

Your Mediavine revenue will rise along with it.

Final Thoughts: Is Mediavine Worth It? 

Yes, it is. 

For as long as there have been blogs, running display ads has been an integral part of any successful monetization plan.

Ads are now an accepted component of the internet and its culture, for better or worse.

So, what do I think about this course? 

First, let me emphasize that the instructions for Blog Growth Engine are clear. 

It’s not a pick-your-own-adventure style application that wanders through a thicket of agency-level strategies.

It skips the preamble and gets down to business.

This is why the course is shorter and less technical than others.

You WON’T find any in-depth tutorials, like how to set up Google Analytics or exit intent pop-ups.

In designing the Blog Growth Engine, they avoided including any content that could be easily found through a web search. 

In other words, if you can find a video of someone showing you how to do something step-by-step online, chances are good that it won’t be covered in the course.

Some people will be disappointed to hear that, but there is LOGIC to Enfroy and Shipp’s approach.

The two instructors are not slackers by any means.

If they feel anything is essential to the course, they will include it.

The “essentialist” concept is intertwined with Adam’s blogging strategy.

It comes down to making sure you can at least break even.

Carrying out the plan and releasing the product.

But it doesn’t mean they threw together Blog Growth Engine without care. 

This merely attests to his skill in honing in on what’s most critical.

He doesn’t want to lead you ASTRAY by suggesting superfluous blogging tasks.

I’ll be honest and say there are some hiccups with the tool. Some of its metrics are overkill, and it’s a little clunky. 

For example, it’ll ask you to use a specific number of LSI terms, which isn’t always possible. 

Including essential SEO elements is crucial, but you must also ensure your content is optimized for human eyes, not just crawlers. 

However, the keyword-tracking feature still makes this a helpful tool if you use common sense. 

It also helps to examine your competitors’ performance for any given keyword closely. 

The content editor makes this process way more convenient if you were going to check out the competition anyway. 

Keyword Research 

We don’t use Surfer SEO to carry out keyword research.

We currently use Ubersuggest and have used Ahrefs. 

But we tried out Surfer’s keyword research tool for this review to be thorough. 

A phrase or seed keyword is still required at the outset.

Similar to other keyword tools, it does its job pretty efficiently. 

Input a seed keyword, and relevant information and related search terms will almost instantly appear.

SERP similarity is a novel addition to the Surfer’s Keyword Research Module. 

This measures how closely related the seed term is to the proposed keywords (which is often useful).

This all might seem a bit too flashy, but what they do is optimize your content or page for a variety of comparable long-tail variations. 

It ultimately increases the likelihood that your content will be discovered.

The Surfer Keyword Research modules are generally suitable for bloggers and small enterprises.

One drawback to Surfer’s keyword research is that it does not provide a difficulty rating for the researched keywords. 

This prevents you from choosing a target keyword based on its relative difficulty.

SEO Audit 

Surfer’s Audit feature is practical and makes it simple to enhance the performance of your website’s current pages.

This is another tool that we spend a lot of time with. 

Enter the URL you want to optimize and the keyword you want to rank for to get started. 

After filling out this information, you’ll be prompted to select the country you want to optimize the page. 

Typically, we leave this at “United States,” as that’s where most of our readers are.

To finish, hit the “Create Audit” button.

Here’s where things get interesting: it’ll thoroughly evaluate the URL you submitted. 

It is very similar to the SERP analyzer in that it performs a keyword analysis and provides the following helpful information:

• Missing LSI keywords 
• Suggested word count 
• Suggested number of headings, paragraphs, and images 
• Page load time 
• Meta title and meta description suggestions 

Based on everything we’ve learned, I advise you not to accept Surfer’s suggestions unquestioningly. 

Remember that search intent is vital, and aim to satisfy users’ plans with your content.

The audit function allows you to resolve these flaws, which search engines use as ranking factors. 

Overall, this is a fantastic resource for updating old content.

Domain Planner 

The Domain Planner does an in-depth analysis of your website’s content.

It highlights any unrealized SEO potential and provides suggestions for immediate gains.

Its insights are reliable since they are grounded in actual data from Google Search Console. 

This tool is hinged on creating a topic cluster of related pages that all link to a central “pillar” page on a target keyword. 

It is an effective strategy for improving a page’s search engine rankings for that keyword. 

If you enter a term or topic, you’ll get a list of related keywords that can be used to organize your page content.

You can filter the clusters based on various factors, including the total search volume and the number of keywords inside each group.

Grow Flow 

Grow Flow is a brand-new, no-cost addition to Surfer SEO. 

It’s their newest tool, designed to make expanding users’ sites more accessible than ever before.

You can use this growth management tool driven by AI from within the Surfer dashboard. 

It essentially recommends critical weekly tasks you can work on to advance in the rankings.

In a nutshell, Grow Flow lessens mental strain and uncertainty from on-page SEO.

There are currently three categories of suggested actions:

• New keywords to include in existing site pages (up to 10 sites) 
• Undeveloped internal link opportunities 
• Keyword goals to target that week to fill content gaps 

It would be best to link Surfer to your Google Search Console to use this tool optimally. 

It’s a bit inconvenient, but it’s worth it if you can get more done in less time.

Changing countries or copying to the clipboard is simple. 

The functionality you need is embedded directly within the browser.

There are simple graphs to see how many people visit, how many words are written, and what words are used in the top search results.

Within this graph’s top 10 search results, you can easily view the total number of words for an individual post. 

This will help you save time in the long run when you’re planning content.

SEO newbies are in for a barrage of complex data.

Surfer makes this information a lot more digestible. 

It allows even those without a strong SEO background to produce content that ranks highly on search engine results pages. 

That doesn’t mean experts won’t learn something from Surfer, though. 

You can get detailed links between on-page ranking criteria and SERP positions for each keyword using the SERP Analyzer tool.

Even SEO veterans will find that Surfer has something valuable to offer.

Tools like Surfer SEO are excellent for optimizing content for search engines, but having a baseline knowledge of SEO is extremely important. There are many free resources out there on the internet. The Disadvantages of Using Surfer SEO 

Might Be Lacking in Depth 

Yes, Surfer is essentially an all-in-one SEO tool. 

However, the team started adding new capabilities that are less robust than other dedicated SEO tools.

For example, other more comprehensive keyword research tools exist because that is their primary focus. 

I’m not saying that Surfer would be useless as your only SEO tool. 

Still, if you already use other on-page SEO tools, you’ll only need the Surfer SEO keyword research tool in specific situations. 

It’s Not Cheap 

The price of Surfer is likely the first drawback that many will think of.

It’s not the cheapest tool out there. 

Yes, you can purchase it for as little as $49.

However, you must purchase its Pro plan for at least $99 if you want enough credits to manage an affiliate website.

Those willing to pay for its conveniences won’t find this a drawback.

Still, $99 is a considerable expense for freelancers and small businesses. 

Extension Slow Load Times 

The Google Doc extension occasionally fails to update the stats.

I’ll need to reload the page for Surfer to extract NLP phrases from the text and update the content score.

This doesn’t happen often, but I think it’s worth mentioning.

Surfer SEO Review Conclusion

Even with all of its improvements, Surfer still has flaws.

Its keyword research leaves a lot to be desired, and I’m unsure if everything it offers is worth using. 

As an added downside, its plan prices may turn off some folks. 

Still, Surfer SEO benefits anyone aiming for high organic search engine rankings.

The tool is worth the price tag just for the content editor alone.

It also eliminates the guesswork around competition metrics.

Give it a try if you want to streamline your team’s workflow and make everyone’s output more efficient and effective.

If your goal is to make affiliate websites and rank them using SEO, the Affiliate Lab course is the best choice. 

The lessons are fantastic, and there’s even a private Facebook group for extra support.

Affiliate marketing is a great revenue stream for bloggers (it’s one of our main ones).

And Gael Breton of Authority Hacker is also the real deal.

As an affiliate, you don’t have to deal with deliveries and customer service (something I love).

By means of your blog, you drive customers to the businesses. The sellers will then give you a percentage on any sales you help them make. 

If you want to build a fresh website, get it to the top of search engines, and monetize it through affiliate marketing, then the Authority Site System is for you.

It’s an excellent training program for bloggers. In addition, you may join their private community. 

Over there, you and other members can share insights, learn from one another, and flourish in your shared interests.

Ahrefs is a killer software.

It’s probably the best SEO tool in the industry (not including all of the AI SEO tools out there!)

It’s been said that besides Google and Bing, it has the largest bot system on the web to crawl websites for data.

It has powerful capabilities that can help you monitor your site’s growth and figure out what may be dragging down your rankings. 

The best part of Ahrefs, though, is that you can take in everything you need to know about using this tool by visiting the website and enrolling in the Ahrefs Academy.

The goal of Ahrefs’ 10-part video course Blogging for Business is to shift bloggers’ attention from traffic generation to lead generation.

While that figure might seem discouraging, don’t lose heart! 

With the help of Brian Dean and Backlinko’s “SEO that Works” online blogging course, even the most inexperienced bloggers may construct high-quality backlinks with ethical strategies.

SEO entails a wide range of technical methods and procedures (there are plenty of courses for SEO as well!)

Choosing one of these platforms might seem like a good idea because they often offer “free” starter plans. 

But this is a massive waste of resources.

First, there are always hidden charges, so “free” ends up not being free at all.  

Plus, there are significant restrictions on your ability to expand and monetize your blog with hosted choices.

This means that switching to a self-hosted WordPress site is something that you’ll most likely have to do eventually.  

The process of switching from a hosted to a self-hosted site is a HUGE hassle.

Settling On A Suboptimal Domain Name 

Your domain name will be your blog’s home on the web.

It has to be a strong one! 

Spending time at the outset thinking through potential problems and selecting a suitable domain name is really important.

Here are some questions to consider:

• Is it easy to remember and pronounce? 
• Are there slurs in it? 
• Does it restrict your brand or your content in any way? 
• Can you get a .com version of it? A dot-com domain is preferable to others like .net, .biz, .tv, etc.

Categories are ok if you’ll never change them. But I believe including a date in your URL is the kiss of death.

In the long run, this creates a lot of issues, forcing many bloggers to set up elaborate redirect systems.

They’ll probably even have to hire folks to fix this problem. 

To switch to the post name permalink format when first setting up your site, navigate to Settings, then Permalinks in your WordPress dashboard. 

What if you’ve been blogging for a year and decide to switch up your post structure? 

You’ll need to set up some redirects to prevent your readers from getting 404 errors and your links from being invalid.

Choosing The Wrong Theme 

The design is only one aspect of your theme.

Your blog’s theme affects its performance, its readability for visitors, its visibility in search engine results, its monetization potential, and its overall growth and success.

The first thing you should do when starting a blog is to determine your specialty.

While it’s never too late to start a blog (there are currently estimated to be 600 million online), it is essential to identify your niche early on. 

There are so many blogs out there now that you can’t just make one on travel or beauty and expect to make money off it right away.

Instead, narrow your emphasis. 

If you’re interested in launching a beauty blog, you could zero in on certain areas like premium skincare or cruelty-free makeup.

If you specialize in a specific topic, your readers will come to see you as an authority on it, and your readership will rise. 

Want to start making money off of your blog quickly? Then stick to a narrower focus. 

Your content pillars—the three to five sub-niches you’ll use as the backbone of your strategy—should be identified once you’ve settled on a broad topic.

Ignoring Updates 

Regular updates to WordPress, its plugins, and its themes give you access to the latest features and security patches. 

However, you’ll need to update these manually in your WordPress dashboard if you want to apply these changes.

Your site could get hacked if you don’t keep your plugins up to date.

Go to Updates on your WordPress dashboard to see if there are any updates available.

Be sure to check the WordPress Updates tab regularly and install any updates that may be available.

Once a week is a minimum frequency at which I would suggest updating. (Note: make sure that the plugin is compatible with your current version of WordPress first!)

Do a manual backup of your site before making any adjustments, just in case something goes wrong.

I didn’t do this when I started blogging, and fixing it was not fun.

Now, in addition to my own backups, my hosting company (WPX) creates backups for me.

Packing In The Plugins 

A site with too many plugins may become less responsive.

Sites that load slowly lose readers and drop in search engine rankings. 

Having plugins that aren’t up-to-date or haven’t been patched in a while can also potentially leave your site open to attack.

My rule is this: keep the number of plugins you use to a minimum; only what is absolutely necessary.

And make sure the ones you do use come from reliable sources and are regularly maintained.

Failing To Post Consistently 

Regular posting is essential to the success of any blog.

Many amateur bloggers are too sporadic in their postings.

Occasionally they’ll go on a posting frenzy but then publish nothing for months. 

Please try to establish a pattern so that your regular readers know when to look for new content from you.

Whether you decide to update once a week, twice a month, or anywhere in between, don’t let your readers down by being inconsistent.

Since your goal is to gain repeat visitors, this is essential.

Going Overboard With The Tags And Categories 

Overusing categories and tags is a typical error made by bloggers of all expertise levels.

There are many experienced bloggers out there who have hundreds of tags. 

In addition to being pointless, this practice can hurt your blog’s visibility in search results and the amount of traffic it receives from such sources.

Think of your blog as a simple book.

Between four and eight broad categories should make up the meat of your blog’s content. 

There are typically more tags than categories because they function more like the index of a book. 

Even so, they should be utilized with caution.

Not Trying To Network With Other Bloggers

Don’t go through your blogging journey alone. There will always be others who understand what you’re going through.

You should aim to build a sizable network, as many of the most popular bloggers have done.

Not Prioritizing Your Email List 

To ensure the long-term success of your blog, you need to immediately begin developing a list of subscriber emails and sending out regular newsletters.

This will increase the number of folks who regularly visit your blog, help you attract devoted followers, and encourage constructive reader comments.

And if that wasn’t enough, expanding your email list will speed up the time at which you begin to see financial returns from your blog.

“The money is in the list” is a marketing mantra for a reason.

Actually, as a rule of thumb, you should be making around $1,000 monthly for every thousand subscribers.

And the sooner you start collecting email addresses, the sooner you may reach that point.

It is critical that you get set up in the early days of your blog.

Google won’t be able to start collecting data until you’ve added the tracking code.

If you want to observe growth and improvement in your blog’s performance, you should start keeping track of your statistics on day one (or as close to that as possible).

You’ll get insights you can use to enhance your blog over time. 

Fixating On Blog Design Over Content 

Of course, your blog’s aesthetics matter, but providing useful content to your audience is far more significant.

Many new bloggers, unfortunately, put zero effort into the actual content of their sites and focus solely on the aesthetics of the design (the logo, the colors, the fonts, etc.).

This is a huge blogging mistake!

Here’s the harsh reality: creating a blog with a “great” design won’t guarantee your success. When you have fantastic material, it will.

Devote just enough effort to the layout and design of your blog to make it passably appealing and not likely to turn away readers.

Then devote the bulk of your energy to the “meat” of your blog, the content. 

After a few months of writing, you will probably want to rework portions of your blog’s design because your tastes and priorities will have shifted.

Therefore, investing a large amount of time into the design at the outset is probably futile.

Writing To Cater To Your Tastes, Not Your Audience’s  

Reading around, you’ll probably notice that most bloggers write pretty similarly. Why is that?

Blog growth and success depend on catering to readers’ interests and tastes rather than the blogger’s own.

There should be much overlap, of course, if you’ve picked your niche wisely.

To achieve this goal, it is necessary first to understand your target market.

Also, keep an eye on your analytics.

Check your analytics to identify which of your posts are getting the most attention, and then keep producing more of the same!

If you find that five of your top ten posts are DIY tutorials, for instance, you should probably create more posts about DIY.

Not Paying Attention To Site Navigation 

You can’t have a blog without the navigation bars.

If done right, they will increase the average number of pages viewed by each visitor to your blog by guiding them to the content that most interests them. 

More people will find your site through search engines if you use them, and they also assist search engines in better understanding your content.

Two navigation bars near the top of your blog are optimal.

Your primary categories belong in one, while your about page, contact page, subscribe page, etc., belong on the other.

Writing Like It’s For An Academic Paper

Also, please refrain from utilizing slang or an abundance of emojis, as well as the acronyms and shorthand commonly used in text messages.

The time you devote to reading other blogs, learning about blogging, and making connections with other bloggers is also invaluable. 

About a quarter of your available blogging time should go toward content creation, while the remaining time should be divided among the other tasks.

If you want more folks to read your blog, you should make it easy for your readers to share your content.

Honestly, too many blog posts finish without any plan for what should be done next.

Unless customers can complete the purchase on that page, it shouldn’t be the final stop.

Involve them and keep them interested.

Do not let them stop learning from you by providing useful links to other resources. 

You can include a call to action (CTA) for a relevant offer that can move them farther along the sales funnel by suggesting a few articles they should read next.

Forgetting Older Content 

Visitors to your site who see out-of-date data or links will likely be put off and not return.

But if you’re always coming up with new material, how frequently do you go back and look at your older posts to see if there’s anything you can change?

Getting your material into the first page is easy; maintaining it there is the real struggle.

Valuable content (especially that which has performed well) should be revisited regularly and refreshed with new information.

Obviously, you don’t want the traffic and leads that a particular post has been bringing in to decrease.

What factors go into picking a schedule for content updates?

To avoid forgetting, you can set a reminder to update articles one year after they were first published.

One of the best times to go back and read something you wrote a while ago is at the start of a new year (especially articles that have the year included in the title).

An update is necessary if either new evidence surfaces or previously held beliefs are debunked.
